Description
Port des Canonge is a small gravel and pebble beach next to a small urbanization of the same name in the municipality of Banyalbufar, on the coast of the Sierra de Tramuntana. It is about 80 m long and 10 m wide.
The beach is a small fishing port next to which a small urbanization was established in the 1950s
It is dominated by the escars, the typical constructions to garrison the boats. The rocks and cliffs that surround it have a very characteristic reddish tone that contrasts with the turquoise blue of the water.
The bottom has sandy parts but it is mainly made of stones and boulders, so the use of sandals is recommended
It frequently has a moderate swell, and although it is not very dangerous, you do have to be careful if you go with children. It is also not prepared for people with mobility problems. This swell can drag posidonia remains to the shore.
The environment is poorly developed
The old fishermen’s houses were replaced by more modern dwellings decades ago, but they are barely visible from the beach.
Although in summer quite a few boats can accumulate, it is not really a good place for anchoring because the cove is so open to the winds from the north and west
In fact, the existence of the port is due to this risk: having a place to keep the boats out of the water when the winds pick up.

Although it is a bit far from the main routes of Mallorca, it is not difficult to get to the Port des Canonge.
How to get to the Port des Canonge by car
To get to Port des Canonge by road, we will take the Ma-1110 as if we were going to Valldemossa, but soon we will find the signs to Esporles. We will cross this town in the direction of Banyalbufar, and after 4.7 km we will arrive at the Port des Canonge detour. In this last stretch of just over 2 km, extreme caution will have to be exercised as there are points where the road is very narrow and winding.
Upon reaching the town center there are two signposted free parking areas. From this point the beach is just 200 m
Port des Canonge is a good place to visit by bike
The main road that reaches the outskirts is wide and well paved, although as a mountain road it has sections of steep slopes.
How to get to the Port des Canonge by public transport
If you want to use public transport, we are out of luck. The closest stop is in Banyalbufar, which we can get to by taking line 20, which leaves from the center of Palma. But from Banyalbufar to Port des Canonge there is a route of more than 4.5 km (known as Camí de sa Volta des General). It is not a difficult route and can be done even with children, but it takes a little over an hour.
How to get to the Port des Canonge by boat
Although it is not an ideal place for anchoring, it is possible to come here by boat, although we should rule it out if the winds blow between the north and the west. The best place to anchor is on the western edge of the cove, where it is up to 7 m deep on a rocky and sandy bottom. The closest port facility is the Port of Sóller, 8.7 miles away.
Services
The beach itself is not a virgin area, since there are buildings and boathouses, but it does not have any services for visitors. There are no rentals of sunbeds, umbrellas or equipment of any kind. There are also no bathrooms or showers, nor does it have a lifeguard service.
In the town there are several bars and restaurants, so the food section can be covered. It is convenient to check the prices beforehand to avoid surprises.
Activities
Port des Canonge is a place to go to relax. Even in the summer months the occupancy is only half. Its clean and clear waters invite you to a refreshing dip.
If we are fans of snorkelling, we are in luck, since the Port des Canonge is one of the best coves in Mallorca where to practice it
The area of rocks on its left bank is the best place for access from land and for the amazing underwater panorama. You have to be very careful with the currents that can form as it is a very open cove.
The same can be said if we are diving enthusiasts
The rocky bottoms and the facility to transport the equipment to the shore make this an ideal place for our dives.
If the sea is calm, it is also possible to get from Port des Canonge to Banyalbufar by kayak or even paddlesurf
This will allow us to visit small coves that are difficult to access from land, such as Son Bunyola and Punta Roja.
The Sierra de Tramuntana in general is a place with many excursions and tours, and Port des Canonge is no exception
We have several routes in which to enjoy this incomparable natural space:
- Route 1: departure from Port des Canonge, passing through the Son Bunyola cove and Sa Galera point, arrival at Banyalbufar and climb to Puig de Ses Planes
- Route 2: round trip from Port des Canonge to Son Oleza, in the Port of Valldemossa
- Route 3: round trip from Port des Canonge to Hort de sa Cova
- Route 4: Port des Canonge to Esporles
- Route 5: Port des Canonge to Deià
For mountain bike fans, it is also a place with interesting routes, although they are somewhat difficult
To regain strength in the town there are a couple of restaurants with Majorcan and Mediterranean cuisine, not affordable but with correct prices.
Lodging
In Port des Canonge the only possible accommodation is some vacation rentals. In Banyalbufar we do have more and varied offer: hotels, farmhouses, boutique hotels and vacation rentals. It is a perfect option for lovers of nature tourism and those who want to escape the crowds of large complexes.
