Ciudad Jardín is a small neighborhood belonging to the district of Playa de Palma, between the neighborhoods of El Molinar and Coll d’en Rabassa

It is a residential area made up of small blocks of houses and chalets. There are only two hotels, one of which, the Hotel Ciudad Jardín, is the one that gives the area its name. Inaugurated in 1922 and with a clear art deco style, it is the oldest in the bay of Palma.

Despite its name, the Ciudad Jardín neighborhood has little to do with the idea of a garden city proposed by the English urban planner Ebenezer Howard in 1902 in his Garden Cities of Tomorrow. The concept was small circular cities built around a large central park, divided into six sectors by large avenues, with several residential and service rings with a very large proportion of green areas, and finally an outer ring for industry.

This approach came to Palma in 1918, when the journalist and businessman Josep Tous i Ferrer acquired the land. However, instead of developing an authentic garden city, a small urbanization of single-family homes was built around a large park, and the aforementioned hotel.

At the time the result was a failure, and the neighborhood suffered some decline over time. However, almost a hundred years after its construction, as if it had been a century ahead of its time, this quiet area of Palma took on great vitality, becoming in fact a neighborhood of a certain luxury. And the truth is that its environment, which has escaped a high population density and has maintained some contact with the natural environment, is a luxury.
