Description
Son Moll, also called Cala Moll, is the main beach of Cala Ratjada, in the municipality of Capdepera, at the easternmost point of Mallorca. It is a beach of fine white sand, which is kept very clean, about 160 m long and between 25 and 60 m wide. Some rocky outcrops mark its two margins.
It is an urban beach around which the tourist complex of Cala Ratjada has grown, with a multitude of hotels, shops and restaurants around it. A long promenade that goes from Cala de n’Aguait, to the south, to Cala Gat, to the northeast, passes by the back of Son Moll.
Its visitors are basically tourists, mainly Germans, but also many British and Spanish mainlanders
The typology of these tourists varies throughout the year. In May and June, and then in September, the typical visitor is young people in groups of friends, so Son Moll becomes a beach that hosts parties and fun. In July and August the main group of tourists are families with children.
Precisely Son Moll is perfect to go with small children because of the sand, the tranquility and shallowness of its waters, and because of the absence of water sports in them
The presence of the bather has prevailed. It also has ramps and wooden walkways to allow access for people with mobility problems, even in wheelchairs.
In the middle of the summer months there can be some crowds, but in the end it is possible to find a place to take a leisurely swim and then relax in the sun.
How to get to Son Moll
As the important tourist center that it is, Cala Ratjada, and in particular Son Moll beach, have excellent connections by land and sea.
How to get to Son Moll by car
Road access to Son Moll is simple and well signposted
- From Palma: we will drive to Manacor on the Ma-15 and from there we will follow the indications to Cala Ratjada
- From the north of Mallorca (Puerto de Pollensa, Puerto de Alcudia, Can Picafort): we will take the Ma-12 towards Artá and then follow the indications to Cala Ratjada
- From the south of the island (Llucmajor, Colonia de Sant Jordi): we can either go to Porreres and then connect with the Ma-15, or to Campos and then to Felanitx. In either case, we will then arrive at Manacor to continue the route to Cala Ratjada.
- From the east of Mallorca (Cala d’Or, Portocolom, Cales de Mallorca): we will first go to Felanitx and once on the Ma-4014 we will continue to Porto Cristo. From here we will go to Manacor to take the Ma-15 to Cala Ratjada
Once in Cala Ratjada we will find the indications to get to the free car park next to the Son Moll beach. If it is full (a common thing in the middle of summer) we can find a place to park in the nearby streets or in one of the other car parks in the town.
How to get to Son Moll by public transport
Less than 50 m from the beach is the Cala Ratjada bus station
The following lines stop here:
- Line 411: from Manacor and Cala Millor
- Line 422: from Cala Mesquida (to the north)
- Line 423: runs through the coves between Cala Provençals and Son Moll, passing through Capdepera
- Line 424: from Porto Cristo, also passing through Cala Millor
To get to Manacor we have several options:
- Line 401: from Palma, on the Ma-15, making only three stops
- Line 416: from Cala Murada and Cales de Mallorca
- Line 427: only in summer, from Porto Cristo and Cala Romántica
- Line 501: also from Palma, but passing through Llucmajor, Campos and Felanitx
- Railway line T3: from Palma, passing through Inca and several towns in the Raiguer region
How to get to Son Moll by boat
This beach is exposed to winds between the south and the northeast, but the bottom is very good for anchoring, between 5 and 6 m deep on sand
There is also a mooring train, with six dead, available during the summer. Another alternative is to moor at the Club Náutico de Cala Ratjada, and on the way visit the bars and restaurants in the port area, or even buy freshly caught fish from the sea.

Activities
Son Moll is designed above all as a beach to enjoy its clean turquoise waters. The absence of water sports avoids the conflicts that may exist on other beaches between swimmers and boats.
If we have brought our snorkeling or diving equipment we can enjoy clear and transparent waters
In Cala Ratjada there are several diving schools where we can rent equipment or hire courses or guided outings. Just one kilometer away is the Faralló de Cala Gat, known among divers as The Big Cheese, as it is an islet crossed by several caves where they can dive up to 30 m deep. We will be able to find abundant schools of fish and even come across barracudas, amberjacks, manta rays or tuna passing through these waters.
Fans of paddle surfing also have the opportunity to practice it in these waters
The route from Son Moll to Sa Pedruscada gives us a new view of this part of the coast of Mallorca.
In the vicinity of Son Moll there are some practically essential visits
Leaving Cala Ratjada towards Cala Gat is Sa Torre Cega, an old watchtower acquired by Juan March at the beginning of the 20th century to turn it into a summer residence. It houses a remarkable exhibition of sculptures and a beautiful botanical garden.
In Capdepera we can visit its castle, a walled town that was the first modern inhabited nucleus and that would end up giving rise to the town. These two places also offer impressive views of the coast and the Levante Peninsula.
In addition to these visits there are some more itineraries to get to know the surroundings of Son Moll
- Route 1: a short walk to Sa Font de sa Cala, another beautiful beach in Capdepera, 4 km away
- Route 2: sharing part of the previous itinerary, this route takes us to Es Carregador and the Na Taconera estate. About 6 km of moderate difficulty
- Route 3: this itinerary that begins and ends in Son Moll takes us for a walk around the tip of Capdepera: Cala Gat, the lighthouse, Torre Esbucada, Cala Agulla, and back, just over 9 km
- Route 4: if we are fit and have time we can tackle this 24 km excursion to Cala Mesquida passing through several coves on the Capdepera coast and visiting Talaia Jaumell and Talaia Aubarca, old watchtowers
Bicycle fans can also enjoy the environment with routes starting and ending in Son Moll
- Route 1: route to Cala Mesquida, bordering the Natural Park of the Levante Peninsula and return to Son Moll, almost 38 km of route
- Route 2: longer and somewhat more difficult in some sections, this circular route also takes us through a large part of the Levante Peninsula, entering its natural park. 58 km somewhat demanding
Even if we don’t go by bike we can take the opportunity to visit the Natural Park of the Levante Peninsula, and also the spectacular caves of Artá. All this less than 20 minutes by car from Son Moll.
If we are more of resting we have at our disposal a good number of bars, cafes and restaurants where we can regain strength after our day at the beach
