Portals Nous beach; luxury beach with incredible views
Services and features
Portals Nous beach, also known as s’Oratori de Portals Nous, is a sandy area of fine golden sand 250 m long and up to 40 m wide. It is located next to Puerto Portals, in the municipality of Calviá, in the southwest of Mallorca, within the Bay of Palma. It gets its name (s’Oratori) for the hermitage that rises on the cliff behind the beach.
It is a perfect beach to go with the family since it goes very gently into the sea, and the waters are very calm
It also has accesses enabled for people with mobility problems.
On its right bank is the harbor dam of Puerto Portals, while on its left bank the beach narrows until it ends in the rocky area of Punta des Terrers. Facing the beach, some 150 m away, stands the Illa d’en Sales, which can be reached by swimming and has a small beach on its north face. Here Punic archaeological remains from the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC were found.
Although it is a practically urban beach, the constructions are not annoying
On the part of the marina they are very low, and those closest to the beach (hotels and apartment blocks) are very hidden by the cliff itself. The view of the Illa d’en Sales and the Punta des Terrers, both covered with pine trees, provides a beautiful panoramic view of the surroundings.
The main drawback that this beach can have is that being easily accessible and being next to a very popular enclave it can present a high occupancy. In general, anyone who wants to escape the crowds should look for other options.
The anchoring of boats in front of the beach is possible, but with caution due to the presence of rocks and shoals
How to get to Portals Nous beach
Getting to the beach of Portals Nous is easy, although the final section of the route to the beach is not fully signposted
From Palma we will follow Via de Cintura Ma-20 towards Andratx and then we will take the Ma-1 motorway. We will continue until exit 10, towards Portals Nous. At the first roundabout we will take the third exit, again following the indication for Portals Nous. We will follow this avenue until Oratori street, where we will turn right. At the end there is a square next to the hermitage where we can park.
Alternatively, when we arrive at Portals Nous we can go to the Puerto Portals car park (priced, but with the first four hours free), and from there go to the beach of s’Oratori while we recreate with the moored yachts and the fashion stores that we will find on our way.
To get to Portals Nous beach by public transport we have several options
- On the one hand we have line 104, which connects Palma with Paguera and Magaluf, but only in the summer months
- Throughout the year, but with time changes, we have lines 106, also between Palma and Magaluf, and 107, between Palma and Cala Vinyes
They all stop in front of s’Oratori street, a few meters from the beach.
If we want to get there by bicycle from Palma we can follow the Paseo Marítimo and then go to Cala Major
From there, bordering the coast, we will only have to follow this avenue until we reach the bus stop in front of Oratori street.
Although with caution due to the presence of rocks and shoals, it is possible to anchor in front of the beach of Portals Nous
The best point would be between Illa d’en Sales and the beach, where the sandy bottom is about 3 m deep. In the vicinity of the islet, especially on its southern and western sides, there are rocks and sandbanks. Near the eastern end of the beach, at Punta dels Terrers, there are rocks that rise to the surface.
The s’Oratori beach in Portals Nous offers all the services that visitors may require on their beach day
- It has a hammock and umbrella rental service, although there is a lot of sand available so that we can plant our own. It also has showers and public toilets (for a fee)
- It has accesses enabled for people with reduced mobility, and in the summer months it has a lifeguard service
- There are facilities for the rental of pedal boats and an area for practicing various water sports
- In addition to the beach bars at both ends of the beach, there is a restaurant next to it, plus the nearby bars and restaurants located in the marina.
The beach of a first class destination such as Portals Nous has to offer a great variety of activities for its visitors, and indeed it is.
The most basic thing is to swim in its clean and calm waters, and enjoy the Majorcan sun lying on its fine sand
If we are somewhat adventurous, we can swim to the Illa d’en Sales. More than 2,200 years ago, this islet was already a stopping point for Carthaginian merchants to trade with the natives before the Roman conquest. This is attested by the remains of Punic pottery found here.
It is also a popular beach for snorkelling
Between its sandy bottoms and the rocky areas furthest from the shore there is a great variety of underwater fauna. It is also a good area for diving.
It is important not to leave the marked swimming area as there are motorized water sports outside it.
On the same beach we can rent pedal boats, kayaks or paddle surf boards
On the right bank of the beach, where the marina begins, is the sailing school, which also organizes classes, both individual and in groups, to get started in this sport.
For hikers, the surroundings of s’Oratori beach do not present a great challenge, but there are beautiful walks
We can take a walk through Portals Nous and Bendinat, or go along the coast to Palmanova.
If, on the other hand, we are fans of cycling, we will have better luck, since many routes leave, or at least pass, through Portals Nous, being able to stop at s’Oratori beach
From here we can go to Costa den Blanes and Bendinat. Somewhat longer, but also easy, is the route to Cala Falcó. And if we want to get a little further away we can get to Cala Vinyes and Portals Vells.
If we go with children, or not so young, a practically obligatory visit in Portal Nous is the Marineland dolphinarium, located next to the roundabout at the entrance to Portals
In addition to visiting aquariums, dolphinariums and aviaries with a great variety of species, we can have fun with the exhibits of dolphins and sea lions.
But one of the biggest attractions of Puerto Portals beach is strolling next to the Puerto Portals marina
With its big brand stores that we can visit after our day at the beach. Not to mention its wide variety of bars and restaurants. We can find from relatively affordable cafes and restaurants to world-famous luxury establishments.
In Portals Nous there is a good offer of accommodation, but not very varied in its category
The vast majority are four-star hotels and a few are five. There are also apartments and chalets for vacation rental.
To find more varied accommodation options, we should look in Son Caliu and Palmanova, or somewhat further afield, in Magaluf.
